Surf Lesson

Our 2 hour surf lessons are held at Tutukaka, Tawharanui and & Mount Maunganui. We offer the perfect surf coaching session to suit your ability.



Intro to surf safety, equipment analysis, wave catching, standing techniques & surf posture.



Surfed before with us or another school? brush up on the basics including surf safety, standing techniques & surf posture.



This will propel you to the next level. Includes paddling out, take-offs, turning, catching green waves & surfing etiquette.


Location: Tutukaka, Tawharanui

& Mount Maunganui

Equipment: Surfboard and wetsuit






Our Learn to surf 'Day Tripper' is great value! A full day at the beach with a morning surf lesson, lunch to refuel then an afternoon surf lesson. O'Neill Surf Academy will teach you how to surf on one of the many Northland or Matakana beaches, we will select the best beach for the days conditions. It's far better to have two surf lessons a day which will help you improve more quickly. We'll can also pick you up and drop you off.


Surfing is for life! Once you've experienced riding that first wave you'll be hooked!

Our family package provides a lesson for 2 parents and 2 children.

Just you and your friends in a group with your own personal surf coach

The O'Neill Surf Academy is internationally accredited and we've helped many people of all ages experience the thrill of surfing their first wave. You’re never too old or young to start! With the right surf coaching you’ll be amazed how quickly you can pick up the basics.


Our Surf Coaches are dedicated to continually improve your surfing in a safe positive environment, ensuring you have the best experience possible. Our enthusiasm, passion and love for the sport is totally infectious, we’ve got the surfing bug and we’re keen to pass it on. Throughout your lesson we’ll be right there with you, giving you lots of encouragement and tips with the occasional high five. We teach surf/beach safety, surf etiquette and obviously how to ride the wave, with the main emphasis on having heaps of fun.


The O'Neill Surf Academy “Learn to Surf” options cover all aspects of learning to surf, whether it’s a brief intro or making serious progress. Our surf courses range from a 2hr surf lesson to an incredible 5 day intensive surf tour where you’ll be smiling from ear to ear from the progress you’ve made and fun times you’ve had!


We offer surf lessons to surfers of all abilities and ages. All of our surf courses include wetsuits and surfboards suited to your size and ability.
