In its purest sense sustainable tourism is an industry which attempts to make a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income, employment, and the conservation of local ecosystems. It is responsible tourism which is both ecologically and culturally sensitive.

Jack O'Neill opened the first surf shop in 1952, he shaped balsa baords and sold accessories like parafin wax and a few vests he'd glued together from neoprene. The vest sold so Jack went into the wetsuit business. Soon surfers were riding more waves and could now enjoy longer sessions in cold water. As Jack improved his wet-suits - new styles, features etc surfing expanded across the U.S. and Canada. O'Neill relocated into a larger factory and he put all six kids to work growing his family business. By 1980, Jack O'Neill's surf shop had morphed into a thriving international company dominating the world's wetsuit market and one of the leaders in beach lifestyle sportswear. In 1985 his son Pat assumed the CEO position freeing Jack to surf, sail and work at a variety of enviornmental projects.
